Quantitative 3D imaging of partially saturated granular materials under uniaxial compression

Abstract Gauging the mechanical effect of partial saturation in granular materials is experimentally challenging due to very low suctions resulting from large pores. To this end, a uniaxial (zero radial stress) compression test may be preferable triaxial one where confining pressure and membrane effects erase contribution small suction; however, volume changes are measure. This work resolves limitation by using X-ray imaging during situ tests on Hamburg Sand glass beads at three different initial water contents, allowing suction-dependent dilation brought light. The acquired tomography volumes also allow development air–water solid–water interfacial areas, clusters local strain fields measured grain scale. These measurements used characterise pertinent micro-scale quantities shearing relate them macroscopic response. new well-controlled data experimental campaign hopefully useful modelling efforts—to end they shared with community.
